The Gazette & TeessideLive
Local newspaper reporter from 2016-2018. I worked at my hometown paper writing strong, accurate copy to deadline. I became a senior reporter in 2018.
Brief
It was a privilege to work for my hometown newspaper. The Gazette and its corresponding website, GazetteLive (now known as TeessideLive), has been a part of my life since childhood. I was welcomed into the newsroom straight out of my reporter training.
I quickly became a strong human interest writer and was often the go-to reporter to go on door knocks, court appearances and inquests.
Another area in which I thrived was reporting on local government meetings and issues.
My portfolio from my two years at The Gazette is vast and varied. We covered a large news patch which encompassed several towns, industrial areas, a national park and people on both ends of the socioeconomic scale.
I am so proud of my time as a newspaper reporter. It made me a much stronger writer and a more compassionate human being.
Results
I was instrumental in driving up page views on the newspaper’s website by coming up with strong content. I often delivered my stories by the medium of Facebook Live videos, generating more social media engagement. I became a senior reporter in 2018 and won the NCTJ Trainee Multimedia Story of the Year in 2017.
Many of these stories were picked up by our sister paper, The Mirror, a national newspaper.
